The Mikoyan MiG-29 ("Fulcrum") is a twin-engine jet fighter aircraft designed in the Soviet Union. Developed by the Mikoyan design bureau as an air superiority fighter during the 1970s, it entered service in the Soviet Air Force in 1982.
Role: The MiG-29's primary role is that of a tactical fighter. Specifically, it was designed to counter American fighters like the F-16%20Fighting%20Falcon and F/A-18%20Hornet in close-range dogfights.
Design Features: It features distinctive large LERX (leading-edge root extensions) which improve high-angle-of-attack performance and maneuverability. It also includes two widely spaced Klimov%20RD-33 turbofan engines.
Armament: The MiG-29 is typically armed with a 30 mm cannon and can carry a variety of air-to-air missiles, including the R-73 (AA-11 Archer) and R-27 (AA-10 Alamo).
Variants: Numerous variants of the MiG-29 have been developed, including the MiG-29S, MiG-29M/MiG-35, and the navalized MiG-29K. These variants often feature improved avionics, radar, and weapons capabilities.
Operators: The MiG-29 has been widely exported and is currently in service with the air forces of many countries, including Russia, India, and several former Warsaw Pact nations.
